Food Champions

John Phillips
John sits on the Board of Cultivate as an active member assisting with various events.
John’s family farm (Broniarth, Newtown) has been in his family for nearly 100 years and he has lived on or near it all his life. John works in Forestry and started growing veg on the farm as a hobby about 10 years ago. He grows mainly root vegetables that go through the local food hub and he is keen to explore the idea of a local farm shop and veg box scheme.
Currently in the process applying for planning to build is own onsite farm shop.

Annie Levy
Annie is a keen and inventive cook who has blogged as Kitchencounterculture, looking at food ecologies and politics through the lens of cooking and eating. She has taught fermentation workshops for years and led cooking clubs in various communities on themes such as food surplus, seasonal eating, and historic Welsh recipes. Currently she is especially interested in how greens and wild leaves are eaten in dishes around the world.
Annie has delivered numerious workshops for Cultivate and is currently delivering a series of cookery workshops under the Growing Food Together project around healthy take aways.

Jess Owen
Jess started her food career in Birmingham on a BSc course in Baking and Patisserie Technology. She studied for 3 years before graduating and starting a job with Cultivate, making cakes and lunches for the deli using local fruit and vegetables from the community garden. She then moved to London to manage a food production kitchen that supplied fine patisserie and decorated cakes for department store restaurants. She has now moved back to Newtown and is running Hafan Yr Afon cafe making homemade delicious food while supporting local growers and businesses.

Junior Food Champion (6yrs)
A has a knowledge and experience of all aspects of food well beyond her years. From foraging in woods, gardens and fields to browsing a supermarket aisle she knows what we should or shouldn’t eat, how you cook it and eat it.
A’s understanding and genuine love for ‘good’ food is infectious and an amazing
example to her peers.

Maya Jordan
Maya Jordan is a writer, storyteller and blogger. She has a regular column for the Daily Mirror’s Parenting Newsletter and her fiction was performed on the BBC by Michael Sheen.
A passionate cook, she taught herself to cook borrowing books from the library, reading them in bed when her babies couldn’t sleep. Mum of six, she grows her own food and loves the challenge of what to do with three tons of tomatoes each summer. She always has an array of jams and preserves in the cupboard, but scarred by the smell of burning vinegar she no longer makes chutney.

Tim Lambert
Tim has a keen appreciation of art and enjoys painting and music. His love of coffee, good communication skills and attention to detail make him a great fit in his role as a barista at Oriel Davis Café. He has a keen interest in food, particularly enjoying eating it and while not claiming to always impress with his cooking abilities he likes to try different recipes and is eager to learn new skills in the kitchen.
